“Traditions That Connect: The Rituals and Symbols of the Camino”
Celebrate the rituals and symbols of the Camino that link us to those who’ve walked before. These traditions are timeless bridges, uniting pilgrims from across cultures and fostering a shared understanding that transcends borders.
Calling All Musicians, Singers, and Rhythm Makers!
A tradition since 2021, the Merry Band of Pilgrims has been growing stronger with every Gathering! If you play an instrument (anything from accordion to washboard), sing, or simply love keeping time, we invite you to join us for our 2025 Gathering performance. Share your talents and joy with fellow pilgrims as we create a musical celebration that embodies the spirit of the Camino. Everyone is welcome—let’s make music together!
The Shell Ceremony
Never walked a Camino. No problem! Prospective and experienced pilgrims are welcome at the 2025 Gathering of Pilgrims. Prospective pilgrims can be ‘sent off’ on their first Camino within a circle of experienced pilgrims wishing them a Buen Camino. First-time pilgrims planning a 2025 pilgrimage will be invited up front for Camino blessings, such as Macrina Wiederkehr’s “Blessings on your Journey,” recited in Spanish and English. Each soon-to-be pilgrim will receive a scallop shell, symbolizing the Way to the Cathedral and the enduring power of faith.
The Cruz de Ferro Tradition
The Cruz de Ferro tradition, inspired by the iconic iron cross along the Camino Francés, is a heartfelt ritual observed at previous American Pilgrims on the Camino Gatherings. Pilgrims are invited to bring a stone or small token, often representing a personal burden, hope, or prayer. During the ceremony, these items are placed at the base of a symbolic cross, mirroring the ancient practice at the Cruz de Ferro in Spain.
